Raagaverse is an exciting Indo-Jazz fusion project spearheaded by Shruti Ramani (voice) in a collaboration with the award-winning Jodi Proznick (bass), the supremely talented Noah Franche-Nolan (piano, Nord), and the fiery Nicholas Bracewell (drums). Raagaverse's music melds ancient and rich Hindustani melodies with dense and dynamic Jazz harmonies. Lyrics in Raagaverse's music tell stories of love, grief, longing, and a sense of being at home.
Raagaverse was formed as a brainchild of Shruti Ramani and Noah Franche-Nolan. When Shruti and Noah played together for the first time, their musical connection was evident to them and their audiences. Shruti and Noah played alongside the exemplary Jodi Proznick for the first time at 2nd Floor Gastown, Vancouver, in January of 2022. This performance was the spark that brought them together as a band. The three of them felt musically and personally understood by one another, and the sensitive and moving music they created during that performance reflected this. At that point, the three of them knew they needed to create a band. Shruti, Noah, and Jodi were looking for a drummer for a gig they booked at the Fox Cabaret (March, 2022). They invited the dynamic drummer Nicholas Bracewell to join them for the performance. The quartet only had a brief soundcheck before their gig started, but from that point forward, it was clear that Nick was the perfect fit for the group. His fiery drumming style fit perfectly with Raagaverse's maximalist music! After their first gig at the Fox, the group named themselves "Raagaverse," to reflect the centering of Raagas in all of Raagaverse's music and conjure imagery of a universe full of modal melodies and jazz harmonies.
Since then, Raagaverse has received attention and appreciation from Canada's music scene. Highlights for Raagaverse so far include performances at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Jazz YYC Canadian Festival, Jazz at the Bolt, and the West Vancouver Public Library.
Raagaverse recently acquired a grant from Canada Council for the Arts, with which they recorded their debut album in the summer of 2023. Raagaverse released their debut album, "Jaya," in May, 2024. Jaya is an homage to Shruti's mother, Jaya, and her musical guru, Dr. Ritu Johri. The album blends Shruti's Hindustani and Jazz influences to create a sound that transports listeners to a new place. Jaya is available to purchase on Bandcamp and is available on all streaming platforms. Raagaverse is currently playing the music from Jaya at their shows, while also teasing exciting music from their upcoming second album! Stay tuned to find out more news about upcoming releases (coming sooner than you think)!
